You like custom, right? We do too. In fact we love custom builds as they let you get everything you want out of the bike, often in a package that would be hard to find with anything off-the-shelf. The downside to this is that custom tends be be relatively expensive, putting it out of reach for many people. Here at CJ Performance Cycles we think everyone should be able to build their dream, so we set out to create a fully custom build that was well equipped and a little bit different for less than £1000, to show that custom doesn't have to mean re-mortgaging your home.
We based the build around the legendary Genesis Croix de Fer frameset, for it's go-anywhere capability, comfort, and rugged simplicity. With the frame's off-road potential in mind Shimano SLX 1x11 was chosen for the drivetrain, giving a wide range of gears for anything from stomping up would-be run-ups on a cyclocross course to cruising to the cafe afterwards. Wheels are provided by Shimano, in the form of their wide-rimmed and reliable RX010 wheelset, wrapped in Continental Race King 35mm all-round cyclocross tyres for grip in all but the grimmest of conditons. The braking is taken care of by Shimano's great value, powerful Deore M6000 brakeset, which inspires confidence when riding in the city or tearing down a descent. In a bit of a departure from the standard Croix de Fer formula, we opted for flat Pro Koryak handlebars for added stability and a more relaxed riding position. The contact points on the handlebars are the comfortable Pro Lock On Race grips. The build is tied together with a lightweight Pro PLT seatpost and Pro Vulture MTB saddle, with a smattering of blue anodised parts for a bit of bling-factor.
The end result is an incredibly versatile bike, perfectly capable as a commuter, long-distance tourer, an entry into the world of cyclocross, or a stylish cafe cruiser. A true go-anywhere, one of a kind machine. Exclusivity, good looks and solid spec don't have to break the bank!
